Peggy’s Cove

No, not that one – the other one

Sometime ago, in an entry on our Ozone Resort, which we are planning on redeveloping, I mentioned that it was surrounded by weird little vacation cabins that looked like buildings you might see in a cartoon or a Disney movie. These included cabins that looked like cartoon versions of windmills, buses, lighthouses and little fairy cottages. It was all pretty strange, but also very Thai.

Just the other day, I noticed an article in the BuzzFeed website on a new vacation spot in a place called Chanthaburi, which is a small town a couple of hours south of Bangkok. This town is on the east side of the Gulf of Thailand and it contains a new vacation spot called Peggy’s Cove. Yes, that Peggy’s Cove – the one in Nova Scotia that many Canadians love to visit.

The real Peggy’s Cove, most identifiable by its famous lighthouse – from 1868 – is not too far from Halifax and has been a lovely spot to visit since, I guess, 1868.

The Thai version of Peggy’s Cove is brand new and is, as far as I can see, a rip off of the real Peggy’s Cove, including a re-creation of the famous lighthouse. How strange is that! Given Thai vacation providers’ interest in creating cartoon-like versions of retreats for Thai vacationers, maybe it’s not that strange at all. This particular resort is practical too. Who wants to travel more than half way around the world to visit Peggy’s Cove when Peggy’s Cove is just a couple of hours away by car?

I wonder what’s next. Maybe it will be Casa Loma or the CN Tower or maybe a version of Banff. The opportunities are endless. However, for now, let’s celebrate the fact that Peggy’s Cove has a twin on the other side of the world. That has to be good news for the inhabitants of the original Peggy’s Cove. Imagine – you have your place in Peggy’s Cove during the Spring and Summer months and then you have your other place in Peggy’s Cove in the Winter, when the weather is lovely and it’s actually the same place, sort of. It’s like living in a parallel universe – but always with nice weather. What could be better.

By the way, the last two shots in the slide deck above are of the real, original, Peggy’s Cove. The rest are of the other Peggy’s Cove – I think.
